Why Maxlight doesn’t install bi-folding doors

Some might say, “Bi-folds are great,” or ask, “Why don’t you do them anymore?”

Why we stopped installing bi-folds

This was a frequent question in 2015, when we took the decision to stop installing bi-fold doors.

The reason was simple: they did not fit our goal.

As our name suggests, Maxlight is all about the light. Our products use the smallest frames possible so that all of our systems let in the maximum amount of light.

More frames mean less glass

Bi-folds, by their nature, have double the number of frames compared with Maxlight doors and many more moving parts.

The engineering trade-off

When they are stacked open, which can be useful in some circumstances, the weight of the doors is cantilevered from the rollers. This places more stress on them, so they have to use lighter and thinner glass, together with chunkier frames, to make the engineering work.

Choosing maximum light

Chunky double frames mean that up to 150 mm can be obscured across every metre. With Maxlight’s almost invisible sightlines, there is only a 20 mm frame, and these frames can easily be positioned more than 2.5 metres apart.

To achieve this, we use toughened glass that can be 10 mm thick externally and is therefore much stronger than the 4 mm glass that is standard in many bi-fold doors.

If you want the maximum available light, strength and reliability, choose Maxlight doors.
